‘The stinky Bangkok river taxi is an excellent way of getting around’, a friend in Chiang Mai told us.
Well we really had a splendid trip sightseeing on the taxi. The smell wasn’t as bad… (compared to us 5 guys).
The fish love the free food.
Locals as well as tourists use the river taxi. Thus we were accompanied by children from school, monks, commuters going to work and many others. The price we paid going up the river was an affordable 15 baht!
Can you see the sceptical looks? We read that we shouldn’t rent scooters from temporary stalls next to the road.Ā But… it was quite a good dealš. So we went for it. These are brand new Honda Click’s, the family who rent the scooters’ pride and joy. When we left the lady asked:”You go slowly…”
Maybe not a good idea to take a longtail in this weather! These clouds had us worrying a bit, but the rain quickly passed and we found another beach for a swim.
We decided that we’d go and see the Tiger cave temple quite late. But armed with scooters and Google maps we set off. We arrived just before dark.
The temple has one stairway with 1,237 steps leading to the summit, so we quickly started climbing. This was definitely harder than it looked. The Buddha on top is quite an impressive figure and we loved the view that the height afforded us of Krabi and the surroundingĀ areas .
Next we hiked down in the dark! We passed a whole family of Monkeys. They are so tame we had to move them out of the way. And they would lean over and feel what’s passing them.
Here is today’s video. We arranged with a local longtail boat skipper last night for a Trip around Phi Phi and the neighboring island Koh Phi Phi Lee for a reasonable amount. Our longtail left at 8:00 and our Captain Noh was a very friendly and interesting guide.
These longtail boats are fascinating. They are pretty versatile and manoeuvre without difficulty. The engine is usually a reliable diesel motor (Isuzu turbodiesel’s, 4y motors and 3 litre Nissan motors etc. )that is driven via a few scooter/motorbike chain and sprockets to the prop at the back. What can go wrong?
Our Captain also survived the Tsunami and has a few missing fingers to prove he really did undergo the ordeal (whilst on his longtail boat!).
Our next move was to Krabi, we rushed to the pier to board the 13:30 ferry, only to realise our ferry(different company) left at 15:30. This afforded us the opportunity to have a leisurely lunch and get some shopping and rest done.
We really enjoyed the market we went to tonight… more on that later.
Our flight to Phuket aboard the Airbus A330 was fantastic, it was pretty empty- we were treated like kings. The approach to the runway was on the opposite side of the island, so we got a stunning view of islands such as Koh Phi Phi and the Pang Nga bay when the plane turned and made the descent. The timing was perfect with the setting sunset.
We enjoyed the beautiful sunrise and views over Abu Dhabi. At midnight the temperature here was 32°C! The chaps went to get water but were shocked when the “cold” water was hot. This airport is huge and it took us quite a while to get to the boarding gate. They announced that it is Ramadan and people are not supposed to eat in public places. Doesn’t look like anyone is paying attention though…
